Over time, your lawn can become compacted. This occurs simply through everyday activities; back yard parties, children playing, dogs running around, and just enjoying your outdoor space. When a lawn becomes compacted, the space between the pores in the soil is drastically reduced. This space is what nutrients, water and oxygen use to make their way to the roots of your lawn.
Core Aeration is a simple process. It includes the use of a machine aerator that has a rotating drum with multiple hollow tines on it. These tines go deep into the soil pulling out "cores" or plugs of soil. With the removal of these plugs, it creates a clear channel for the nutrients, water and oxygen to again get to the roots of your lawn.
Have you ever noticed a layer of dead grass and leaves at the base of your lawn? That is what is called thatch. Having that layer of thatch at the base of your lawn inhibits the ability of water, oxygen and nutrients from being able to penetrate the soil and feed the roots. This can be detrimental to a lawn and not allow it to grow and flourish to it's full potential. This thatch layer can also house bacteria, disease and insects that can quickly destroy any beautiful yard.
Dethatching, also called power raking, uses a mechanical rake to lift the thatch layer out from the base of your lawn, giving the soil the ability to breathe and take nutrients again.
There are times when your lawn can start to look patchy or brown, it may not seem as lush and full as you may prefer. That is when overseeding comes into play.
Overseeding thickens your grass and adds new grass to areas that may have died off or where you may have killed off where weeds previously occupied. Without human interaction, grass will spread, sprout and seed itself, however, when we keep our lawns manicured, we do not give it the opportunity to go to seed and allow for spreading. This causes some bare spots to remain bare and without new grass.
Overseeding goes hand in hand with aeration services. We like to open up the soil and allow for the best opportunity for new grass to grow with minimal interventions. If you're looking to add some new grass to the bare spots in your property, let us know and we can discuss some options to assist!
After the over-seeding process, or a patch job, proper care for your new seed is imperative to make sure that you get the best results possible!
