 A blanket of mulch 3-4 inches deep helps to smother weeds and keep them from sprouting. The strong weeds that do pop through will be easier to pull since their roots will not be deep in the soil!  

 Why do you want worms? Mulch encourages worms to live in your soil. The worms dig tunnels that help to bring air and water into the soil. The worm excrement works as a fertilizer. Where there are worms, there is healthy soil! 

 Mulch helps to regulate the temperature of the soil. This keeps your plants roots cooler when it is hot outside and warmer in the spring and fall. This helps keep your plants safe during frost before it is winter. 

 Mulch helps your plants and garden beds retain moisture. This will keep them healthier longer. Yes, you still need to water them, but not as often! When using mulch, a soaker hose is the best way to water and allows the water time to soak into the soil! 

 Mulch eventually decomposes when you leave it in your beds and only top off with a fresh layer each year. This is a good thing! The decomposing mulch provides nitrogen and other nutrients to your plants.  

 Watering and rainfall can wash away soils. When you add mulch to your gardens or landscape, it lessens the impact of the water droplets as they hit the ground, creating a barrier that slows or stops erosion.
